"My supervisor suggests that these different driving forces manifest in the intent behind the client's "dramatic, emotional, or erratic" behavior. Specifically, it is more characteristically erratic in BPD - the emotionality is not typically planned or intended, but the result of the client feeling like s/he is out of control, or even dissolving. In contrast, the behavior seems more instrumental (i.e., goal directed) in HPD - it is in service of gratifying the need for attention, with more calculation as to the effect the behavior will have on others. Thus, clients with BPD may be much more likely to experience unintended effects of their behavior, but still be unable to choose more adaptive behavior. My supervisors suspected that our client had HPD because she seemed more in control and calculating in her behavior than one would expect from BPD."

HPD vs. BPD by user @ Psych Forums
Stealing not intended. Just do not want this great information to get lost or deleted
"Talking HPD women and BPD women...IMO
Many HPDs have similar overlaps with BPD's:
-HPDs are also looking for a hero and savior (often casting you using in white knight or prince imagery)
-HPDs can also act like they are vulnerable, and often seem much younger than they are.
-HPDs can also turn into haters, splitting you, in which you go from white knight and savior to a betraying dark pariah.
-Many HPD's also have periodic windows of both dissociation and empathy, although as a general rule BPD's dissociate more intensely than HPDs and maybe because BPD's are afraid of abandonment, they seem more empathetic than HPD's.
Possible differences:
-HPD's are often very attractive; therefore they exude more social power and confidence than BPD's.
-A significant percentage of HPDs experience sexual satisfaction problems, and despite their seductive behavior they have little interest in sex; BPDs more readily become addicted to sex (or drugs, alcohol, etc,), perhaps as a way to ameliorate the BPD aversive tension they live with.
-BPD's are more paranoid when it comes to others; HPDs gullibly, even carelessly approach others (incl. AsPDs or other exploitative people ) in search of supply: attention and validation.
-From her side, the HPD relationship has a lighter, more carefree feel; you don't feel so that one-on-one intensity as in a BPD relationship.
-HPD is more organized, to the extent that besides a main boyfriend, many run a fan club with other guys that they are flirting with..."emotional cheating"... or in some limited cases, also having intimate affairs with. The main b/f and the members of the fan club are usually kept seperate by the HPD, and thus there is often a secretive air about all these goings on.
-In some HPD's the splitting also causes them to run two types of male relationships, either one right after the other, or in some cases at the same time, with these male types:
(a) older guys who are like father figures to the HPD
(b) younger 'bad boys,' who are often NPD or AsPD. or who have at least those some of those traits.

For Those Who Have Stayed By Erin Marshall @ TWLOHA
"I will be the first to admit that I am not easy to spend time with. It’s
exhausting and frustrating for me, and I imagine it is equally as
frustrating for you.I become irritable at the drop of a hat.I’m
controlling. It sucks having incredibly limited control of my mind and
the physical manifestations of my anxiety. To compensate, I crave
whatever control I can get. Staying on schedule and having a routine is
important because it provides me with something that I can count on.I
may present as clingy or dependent to some of you, requesting your
constant presence while going to the grocery store or the post office.
Please know this is because I trust you to help me tackle a task that
seems too daunting to do on my own. I apologize too often, convinced
that even the simplest inconveniences are my fault. Please don’t get
annoyed.I’m indecisive to the extreme. The fear of making the wrong
decision means that the odds of ever getting a straightforward answer
from me are likely zero. Please, if making me choose, at least limit it
to two choices.I believe that everyone who puts up with me secretly
hates me or finds me annoying. Please don’t take offense. I have the
tendency to push people away. I often passive aggressively vocalize and
push my frustrations with limitations onto those around me who are
living a ‘normal’ life. It’s merely an expression of jealousy of the
freedom you have. It has nothing to do with you. It is a poor coping
mechanism that I unfortunately use to conceal what I consider to be a
personal weakness. Please don’t take it personally.

BPD/HPD the differences by orion13213 @ Psych Forums
"BPD: better named Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder ? : in the worst cases nearly psychotic episodes of dissociation. The best known splitters among the PD's: at any one time they see people as good or evil with few intermediate characteristics. Frequent emotional outbursts, more so than HPD (the feral cat analogy the above poster suggested is a good one). Lack of self image and self identity: BPD's have such a vacancy within themselves they often end up sounding like the other person they are having a conversation with. Afraid of being abandoned or alone. Known for impulsive behavior and addiction to sex, alcohol, marijuana, harder drugs, gambling, and other risky behaviors. Some make superficial cuts to the arms and legs to release analgesic endorphins. Serious suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts.
In a relationship with a BPD you would probably feel in control and secure, but after a while maybe smothered. Breaking up could be even more problematic, however, since it might trigger rage, obnoxious stalking, simple assaults, or in rare cases, worse forms of violence.
On the positive side, if you really love a BPD they have the best chances of remission, and they seem to possess genuine empathy. Unfortunately it is such a crippling condition for those who have not sought treatment, many are un-employed or under-employed.
BPD emotional supply: "Go away - no -I changed my mind, stay with me!"
HPD: like a more functional version of BPD, with a more tightly focused psychological challenge: relationships with significant others. In the beginning you will feel like the most loved person in the world, probably only later to suddenly fall into oblivion. Probably the most well known cheaters among the PD's. Like BPD's, HPD's split, and this explains the extreme initial idealization / later devaluation of you, and the constant search for the ideal man (or woman). They don't seem to be intentionally trying to hurt others, though. Some say the only way to sucessfully manage a relationship with an HPD is to keep them guessing: don't let ever them know know you love them and set down strict disciplinary guidelines regarding cheating. If you are too serious about life, they have a refreshing light superficial perspective, but don't expect too much deep intellectual reflection (unless they are trying to recover). Despite supposed problems with orgasms, great in bed, if they are so inclined. Fairly well represented in professional buisiness and entertainment circles.

Types of personality disorders & rant
NPD subtype of HPD for the win!!
But it is what makes me and not every case is the same. These people feel love and are afraid of getting hurt just like everyone else. We don't need to be "fixed" we are perfect in our imperfections. In some cases though, I will say we just need to learn how to tone in down a bit and release those feelings in other ways.
Except Antisocial and full on NPD. you people are just mean

"If I had to try to explain why I began to self-harm....I would tell you... I needed to feel as though I was worth something,"
Self harm is a trait of HPD. I will admit I have done it before, and this is the exact reason why.
Not for any other reason than I needed to feel;something, anything else than how unwanted I felt.
"If I had to try to explain why I began to self-harm, it would look something like this:
I would tell you I needed to matter; I needed to feel as though I was worth something, anything. "
